Succeed – Day 26 – The litmus test to know if you have a worthy goal.
We’re nearing the end of our focus on FOCUS and the pillar of SUCCEED.
You’ve had time to think and write about your chosen purpose(s) in life now.
I hope you’ve made some headway…or if you were already clear, hopefully now you’re even more clear.
Early on I mentioned to just pick something if you’re unsure, and said a worthy goal is simply this: Helping people in some way.
But what if you just love playing music, singing, or creating art in some form? Does that help people?
Sometimes it doesn’t help others directly…but it usually helps YOU feel joyful and alive!
We need to care for ourselves to be capable of caring for others.
And part of that self-care is certainly play, art, music, and any other thing that makes your heart sing and brings you joy.
Sometimes we wonder if it’s selfish to focus on our talents and deep loves…when we can’t see whether it’s benefiting anyone else.
My wife Nan loves to run – and she is amazingly talented.
Running makes her deeply happy – it’s a core part of who she is –she thoroughly enjoys it.
But sometimes she wonders if pursuing her running goals is right – because she doesn’t see it directly serving anyone – and it’s time away from our children, and her other responsibilities.
There is no ONE answer to this challenge that fits for everyone.
It’s not as simple as saying “it’s not a ‘worthy goal’ if it doesn’t directly bless another persons life.”
Sometimes pursuing our talents and gifts actually is a major blessing to those around us.
Because it fills us with joy. We are more alive. We are maximizing the gifts we’ve been given.
And then we’re in a position to serve others better in other ways.
There’s an energy and vibrancy that comes into our lives when we follow our passion and bliss at least a little each day.
This energy enhances everything else we do…our parenting, our work, and our friendships.
The inspired author Dr. Wayne W. Dyer said, “Don’t die with your music still inside you. Listen to your intuitive inner voice and find what passion stirs your soul. Don’t get to the end of your life and say, ‘What if my whole life has been wrong?”
It is definitely a worthy goal to pursue what brings your heart joy.
It may not be ‘directly’ helping others, but singing YOUR song and being the best YOU, is essential to serving others in big ways in the long-term.
If you are setting goals and ideals that you just dread the thought of just because you feel like you ‘should’ do them – explore that with yourself in writing.
Get out a pen and ask “why do I want to do that thing?”
Then ask why to your why about 5 times. The awareness you will gain will let you choose better goals.
It’s time to find your love motive within and bring it out.
What do you love to do?
Dale Carnegie said, “You never achieve real success unless you like what you are doing.”
Napoleon Hill said, “No man can succeed in a line of endeavor which he does not like.”
And Steve Jobs, in his famous Stanford commencement said: “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
So what if you are feeling stuck in obligations or work that you don’t like?
Figure out a way out. Or else figure out a way to start liking it.
There is always a way.
I had become bored and dreading my real estate business in 2011. Then I ‘woke up’ one evening when it dawned on me that I have power to direct my own thoughts. Because of this I am never stuck.
And the same is true for you and everyone
If you don’t love something, make a change!
You get to control the future from this moment on.
If you are stuck in rut of dreading parts of your life, probably the most worthy goal is, “I will find a way to LOVE every aspect of my life somehow!”
Do you see how that gives you something to go after passionately each day?!
“Each one of us has a fire in our heart for something. It’s our goal in life to find it and to keep it lit.” – Mary Lou Retton
Put pen to paper and clarify a worthy goal.
Visualize it, and then take small action steps forward today.
That’s the way to ‘keep your fire lit’ and love your life.
And what’s the test to see if it’s a ‘worthy goal’? Consider these questions:
Is it honest? Is it pure? Is it unselfish? Is it loving? Does it bring you joy? Does it expand your soul? Do you love it?
If the answer’s are all yes – you are right on track!
Whatever you do…do it with LOVE.
