Smile – Day 9  – How to choose to be happy right now

Today let’s talk about how you feel when you wake up…

Are you waking up happy?

Are you expressing gratitude as you picture in your mind things you feel grateful for right when you become conscious in the morning?

What I’ve done to help remind me to do this is I post the Truly Amazing Life Poster right on the wall by my bed.

That way it reminds me and brings my awareness to how amazing life is first thing every morning.

I realized recently that since I moved my master bedroom downstairs and I hadn’t moved the poster.

I didn’t notice why, but I hadn’t been feeling as happy and my days weren’t starting as great.

I didn’t realize the influence the poster was having, but now I see clearly that it is quite responsible for me starting off many days feeling amazing.

Because we tend to focus on what we see.

Visual reminders in our environment are highly influential.

I love Norman Vincent Peale, he feels like a brother to me, and he said a wonderful thing about this:

“When you get up in the morning, you have two choices – either to be happy or to be unhappy. Just choose to be happy.”  – Norman Vincent Peale

And how do you ‘just choose to be happy’?

By expressing gratitude VERY FIRST THING when you wake up.

Expressing gratitude is the active choice to be happy right now.

Use any reminder you need.

I have found the TAL poster works wonders as a reminder because it displays all 12 pillars of a Truly Amazing Life for your conscious mind to consume and wake up to.

Remember, every day is like a new life.

In a sense we hit the reset button every night and we start over in many ways the next day.

It’s almost like you need to re-write and re-install the software in your operating system each day.

If you don’t, you’ll end up allowing whatever information you come across to be installed in your mind today by default.

So by starting the day looking at and reviewing the 12 pillars up on your wall, and expressing gratitude to be alive, awake, for a new day, for your health, for whatever you feel in your heart…

…You make the default program you are running on for the day GRATITUDE.

It’s natural and easy to default into a day with a poor attitude if we don’t consciously start with gratitude.

Yesterday I quoted Wallace D. Wattles, a philosopher from the early 1900’s who wrote some amazing works.  He also said this I find very important:

“Many people who order their lives rightly in all other ways are kept in poverty by their lack of gratitude.”  – Wallace D. Wattles

And that can refer to poverty in every area of your life, not just financial.

That includes poverty in your relationships, your health, and your peace.

Without gratitude, poverty is the default option.

And I like the point he made about how everything else can be ordered correctly, but without gratitude we can be stuck.

Gratitude unlocks the door to worlds of possibility in every area of your life.

And one of my all-time favorite quotes on this topic is:

Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.” – Marcus Tullius Cicero

So make sure you are starting every single day getting wrapped up in the FEELING of gratitude.

It will spill out into your whole life and change the course of everything that happens and all of your responses to what happens.

It will fill your life with enthusiasm.

And enthusiasm is contagious so you will naturally infect those around you with it.

Gratitude is the best way to start your day, live your day, and end your day.
