Smile – Day 23 – The winds of grace analogy

A German Theologian Meister Eckhart who lived from 1260-1328 A.D. was credited to say:

“If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, “thank you,” that would suffice.” – Meister Eckhart

How simple and how beautiful is that?

We often pray and pray, beg and beg for things to change, for help with this and that.

But how focused are we on saying thank you?

We’re highly focused of course!  We’ve been focused on it for 23 days now!

And let’s stay laser-focused this entire week so we can make this habit of appreciating a permanent fixture in our daily life.


“Appreciation and gratitude are a must if you choose to become the architect of increased happiness and your own fulfillment.” – Doc Childre

And of course we DO CHOOSE to architect our increased happiness and fulfillment.

Because happiness and fulfillment bring joy, and that’s the purpose of life.

And as Doc, the founder of the non-profit Institute of HeartMath said correctly, ‘appreciation and gratitude are a must’ in order to be that architect.

And now a bit of important imagery for you:

“The winds of grace are always blowing, but you have to raise the sail.” – Sri Ramakrishna

Picture yourself lost on a stormy sea, being tossed about and feeling fear.

All around you the winds of grace are blowing, ready and able to take you away from that storm into calmer waters and greater peace.

But YOU must raise the sail.

You raise the sail through appreciation.

As you express gratitude, and feel it deeply, your sail goes up and those merciful, graceful winds pick you up and grant you peace.

You immediately feel the peace even in the midst of the storm as you are filled with hope and direction.

And soon enough those sails of appreciation have been carried by the winds of grace to ‘genial and sunny circumstances’ (as James Allen taught us earlier).

Appreciation is your sail.  Keep raising it daily.

Now, here we are 23 days in…and I realize there are a couple possibilities here:

Possibility 1 – You may have been beat up by storms, or distracted by travels, or life in general these past 23 days.

This may have distracted you from giving your whole heart to the habit of appreciation this month…or…

Possibility 2 – You have been diligent daily and have been on a rampage of appreciation, morning and night for the past few weeks.

If the first is what happened for you, be kind to yourself.

Don’t go further beating yourself up…the storms and distractions do a perfectly good job of that.

Just be here now, and go to gratitude.

It’s so easy to focus on failings and faults if we didn’t meet our expectations of ourselves perfectly.

That’s the initial byproduct of failed expectation.

But it’s OK!  Let it go and love yourself anyway.

Then just take advantage of these last few days of appreciation focus, and look for what you can be thankful for.

If the 2nd possibility happened and have been on a rampage of appreciation this month, CONGRATS!  That’s great.

Don’t let it go to your head though 😉

Each of us faces storms at different times…you can find gladness and joy in every season if you just focus on appreciation today…

…without getting caught up in what DID or DID NOT happen yesterday.

No matter what has happened this past month…amazing peace or a stormy turbulent ride…


…this will let you be KIND!

…which will let you be MERCIFUL!

…all of which will bring you joy regardless of your circumstances.
