Smile – Day 12 – Feeling grateful is your goal…not just saying thank you.
Hello again! Today I want to focus on FEELING GRATEFUL.
Let’s remember to start the day first thing in the morning in that deeply grateful state.
Did you take the time yesterday to think back on the people who have re-ignited your spark of life when it has gone out?
How did that feel to think of them and say thank you in your heart, or on paper?
If you missed that opportunity for whatever reason, pause, and do it right now.
Stop, and allow yourself right now in this very moment to feel deeply grateful.
The author Melody Beattie who first wrote “Codependent No More” said this on gratitude:
“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.”
“It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity.”
“It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.” – Melody Beattie
Gratitude is truly amazing.
Gratitude is powerfully transformative.
Does it really turn what we already have into ‘enough, and more’? YES. It does.
And “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life”!! How does it do that??
Because in an instant we can go to from feeling despondent to feeling joyful, by simply expressing gratitude and allowing ourselves to feel it in our heart.
Beware of the empty routine of just going through the motions and saying ‘Thank you’.
Anyone who has prayed regularly over a meal can relate to the rote, monotonous routine it can become to ‘say grace’ or say thank you for a meal.
Sometimes our routines can become empty, and that is no different with the routine and habit of gratitude and appreciation we are establishing this month.
But the routine only becomes empty when we allow it to happen devoid of FEELINGS.
Rather than emptiness, when we take time for full feeling we unlock its fullness!!
And it’s a very simple shift.
Rather than just saying thank you to check it off the list…make the thing you check off your list to FEEL GRATEFUL.
Until you have truly felt deep gratitude, you have not truly said thank you, and your task is not done.
FEELING GRATEFUL IS YOUR GOAL…not just saying thank you.
A surface ‘thank you’ with no feeling may be better than no thank you at all, but not much.
So today…focus on the feeling.
Every single time you say thank you, allow space for yourself to FEEL IT.
That means slowing down instead of rushing through.
When you write in your journal at night it’s as simple as pausing for even a few seconds after each thing you write, and pondering on it, allowing space for the feeling of gratitude to well up inside you.
So how does gratitude turn ‘confusion into clarity’??
Well…that doesn’t happen when we just go through the motions.
But with true gratitude, confusion can be dispelled and clarity emerges because our thoughts are lifted to a higher place, with greater perspective.
Deeply feeling gratitude is like stoking the fire in a hot air balloon…it lifts you above the trees and enables you to see clearly for miles.
How does gratitude “turn a house into a home”?
Ever feel like you’re all alone in a house full of people?
Try expressing deep gratitude for those around you, whether directly to them, or silently to yourself in thought or in writing.
Loneliness will quickly dispel as your focus shifts and a feeling of love settles into your heart.
Feeling deeply grateful is the key…make that your goal.
Don’t allow an empty routine to rob you of the transformative power of gratitude today.
Make today amazing!
